A Ghostly Suspect: Review

Most people don’t look forward to returning to a funeral home but I sure was when I found out Tonya Kappes would soon be releasing the next in the Ghostly Southern Mysteries with one of my favorite book characters, Emma Lee Raines.

Emma’s character is fascinating because she lives in the world of the living and the dead in more than one way. She helps the souls of those who have been murdered solve their murder and move on to the afterlife. Emma is kind of a Private Investigator for ghosts.

The first lady to ever help Emma Lee is found dead with a glass of poisoned sweet tea and she, Emma, becomes the main suspect. What proper southerner poisons sweet tea? That’s not right. With troubling financial times for Eternal Slumber Funeral Home and the owner of Burns Funeral home just looking for a way to steal clients from them, things don’t look so great for Emma Lee.

From small town gossip to trying to solve the murder of Emma’s new client, psychic, Debbie Dually, things go from bad to worse the more she tries to help solve the case. Can Emma get a break? Nope, not so much. Will she solve the case so Debbie can cross over? What’s with all these other spirits floating around that Emma isn’t suppose to be dealing with? Will her cop boyfriend finally say enough is enough with her snooping and lock her up? I’m not going to tell you. You’ll just have to visit this fascinating small town yourself. Bring your manners, your hunger for southern food and a good ear as you help
Emma solve this unprovoked murder.

Like all of the Ghostly Southern Mysteries, you can start on whichever one you want because Tonya does a fantastic job of recapping Emma’s “condition” and gets the readers, new and old, caught up really well. It’s one of those things that make her books great. A reader can always choose which sounds the best for them. That of course then hooks the readers.

Now, if you’d excuse me, I’ve got a funeral home to get back to.  You should too, so here is the link to buy this amazing book.  It’s out NOW!

Spies and Spells and Betting Off Dead!

Review: Betting Off Dead by Tonya Kappes

Betting off Dead Cover

I can’t imagine that keeping one’s identity, as a witch in a southern town in Kentucky can be very easy. Southern ladies love to gossip you know. I know. I have lived in Kentucky most all of my life. That’s why I am pretty impressed with how clever Maggie Parks and her family have been, hiding out in Belgravia Court in Louisville all these years. Perfect setting to become a spy, right? Let’s just pile more secrets on. Anyway, if it weren’t for that flying owl, Miss Kitty, and a few other things, maybe Mrs. Hubbard would lay off them. Okay, may not.

Betting off Dead is the second in the Spies and Spells series from the Kentucky native, Tonya Kappes. She captures southern culture to a tee. Between the close knit family to the nosy neighbor, she has this witch family sitting pretty in one of the pretties cities in the state.

In this second installment, we join Maggie after she has found out what her life calling is suppose to be and just like all southern moms, mama isn’t having it. Mom Parks is going to do everything she can to protect her daughter from danger and that handsome, shall I say smoking hot guy, that keeps popping up that everyone in the family says is going to cause her nothing but trouble. What’s a daughter to do? After all, Mick Jasper is her co-worker and partner. Well, get dressed and go get into danger with the guy of course! It’s horse city and there is something fishing going on down at the Derby. With her familiar, a 1965 AC Cobra named Vinnie, and some witchy know-how, Maggie tries to help the horses of the Blue Grass state.

Not all goes smoothly of course. In the process, she loses a dear friend, faces a death she doesn’t realize would hit her so hard and starts to own who she really is. Maggie comes into herself in this second book. Tonya helps us journey with not only Maggie, but Aunt Mimi, Ms. Parks, Lilith and Abram. It’s a tough transition to watch, but well worth it once everything is revealed in the end.

Betting off Dead was an amazing book, so I can’t imagine how book three will be. Maggie is now aware of who she is and I am hoping fully accepted by her family. This is for a sure a coming of age story that so many people can relate to. Maggie is the one who is different from the rest of her family and they have to learn to accept her differences and I think they do. I hope they do. Beautiful book Tonya. The action and adventure in the book are fantastic, but the take away for me was the acceptance Maggie finds.

FIXIN’ TO DIE Cover Reveal!

We are starting the week off right with an amazing cover reveal and excerpt from the amazing Tonya Kappes, Fixin’ To Die, the first book in her Kenni Lowry Mystery series, arrives on June 14th.

About the book:

FIXIN TO DIE cover FRONTKenni Lowry likes to think the zero crime rate in Cottonwood, Kentucky is due to her being sheriff, but she quickly discovers the ghost of her grandfather, the town’s previous sheriff, has been scaring off any would-be criminals since she was elected. When the town’s most beloved doctor is found murdered on the very same day as a jewelry store robbery, and a mysterious symbol ties the crime scenes together, Kenni must satisfy her hankerin’ for justice by nabbing the culprits.

With the help of her Poppa, a lone deputy, and an annoyingly cute, too-big-for-his-britches State Reserve officer, Kenni must solve both cases and prove to the whole town, and herself, that she’s worth her salt before time runs out.

Excerpt:

“Calling all units. Calling all units.” Betty Murphy’s voice felt like a stiletto in my ear as it came over the police walkie-talkie.

The clock read seven in the morning. Betty couldn’t have been at the sheriff’s office long enough to already be calling all units.

Not a good sign for a Monday morning. I had yet to enjoy my cup of coffee.

“Damn,” I groaned, putting the coffee cup in the beanbag coffee holder that lay over the hump on the floorboard. It was too early for anyone in Cottonwood, Kentucky to be out and about, much less needing assistance from the sheriff’s department. Well, unless it was about the multiple coyote sightings that had been reported throughout the county, which weren’t unusual for this time of the year. In that case, I had my twelve gauge nestled on the backseat, ready to scare them away.

Duke lunged his front paws from the passenger side to the floorboard, licking up what little coffee had spilled. There was no way he was getting all of his ninety-pound body squeezed down on the floorboard.

“Kenni, you there?” Betty asked again before I could un-velcro the walkie-talkie from my shoulder. “Calling all units.”

I wasn’t sure why she’d be calling for all units when the only unit was me, and Betty was well aware of that fact. Holding the steering wheel steady with one hand, I reached up and grabbed the police radio.

“Betty, I’m here.” I twisted the windshield wipers on to get what was hopefully the last of the lingering rain we’d had over the past few days. “What do you have for me?”

“Oh God, Kenni.” She sounded out of breath, rushing over my nickname, short for Kendrick. “I mean, Sheriff Lowry. I barely got in the door and put my pocketbook down before the phone started ringing.” She didn’t skip a beat. “Ronald Walton is dead and you better get over there before the rest of the town hears about it and beats you there.”

I jerked forward when I brought the old Wagoneer to an abrupt stop. I scooted up on the edge of my seat and looked out the windshield and over the hood to make sure the engine wasn’t lying on the pavement.

“What?” Shock came over me. I stared out the window. Betty had to be mistaken.

Doctor Walton had birthed over ninety-five percent of the population in Cottonwood, including me. He was old, but not casket-shopping old. And his death would be a blow to the community.

“D-E-A-D!” She spit out each letter for me as if I didn’t know how to spell.
